Anti-US sentiment has  grown in many parts of the world over the past 5 years but attitudes towards China, the strongest challeger to US hegemony, have also worsened, according to a survey of global public opinion.

 

Flaverable opinions of the US have fallen in 26 of the 33 countries where people are questioned since 2002 and confidence in president Geroge W Bush has collapsed in most parts of the world.

 

But the Pew Global Attitudes Project found little enthusiaism for the rise of China as a counterweight to the US, with the flaverable opinion of the country having fallen over the past 2 years in nine of the 15 nations  where the comparable data existed.

 

 

Almost every week, another company makes a new investment predicated on Asian's emerging middle classes, banks, retailers, cumsumer goods makers are all piling into the region.  Are they in for a long wait？

 

Not according to the bullish forecasts, McKinsey expects China's low middle class to swell to 290m by 2011 and the upper class, defined as those earning  an annual $4000-$12.500, rise to 250m by 2050. By that time, the consultancy estimates , India will have 583 m paid-up members of the middle class.   In  less than two decades, the two countries together will have more than three times as many rabid comsumers as the US has citizens. That added up to a lot of pennies in the till: $ 1.660bn of disposable  incoming in real term in China alone.

British Airways lost more bags per passager than any other large airline in Europe, according to a report from the association of European Airlines.

The Airline Transport Users Coucile (AUC) in the UK called for the publication of name and shame league tables for  airlines around the world in order to lead a drive for improved performance,it said European league tables published by the European Commission (would be a good place to start).

The AEA statistics show that BA lost 23 bags per 1000 passagers last year compared with 21 at TAP Air Portugal. 18 at Lufthansa and16.6% Air France.

According to Financial Time news, Japanese industry is growing much stronger than expected raised market expectations yestaday that the Bank of Japan would increase interest rates, possiblely next month.Industrial production in the country expanded by 1.6 per cent in October from the previous month to its the highest level since January 1998. The growth surprised the financial markets, which had anticipated a modest 0.4 per cent contraction in activity.

The news helped the yen to rally from a fresh low against the euro as traders bet that the strong data was likely to aid the Boj's case for raising interest rates again soon, possibly even as early as next month.

Everybody was rather staggered to see much strong number, said Richard Jerram, chief economist at Macquarie Securities in TOkyo.
